Young, desk-bound and stiff already?
Nicola Tik

You are young, maybe in your first proper desk job, and you have started noticing something that feels a bit unfair: you get up from your chair and you are already stiff. When you are meant to be at your springiest, that can be a little unsettling, and it is easy to wonder what it means. The reassuring truth is that it is very common, and it is almost certainly not what it might seem.

This is not your body ageing early

Stiffness at your age is rarely wear and tear or your joints giving out ahead of schedule. What is far more likely is a big, fairly sudden change in how much you move. Many people go from a life packed with built-in movement, school or uni corridors, sport, generally dashing about, to sitting for most of the day, almost overnight, when they start desk work. Your body adapts to whatever it does most, so when that becomes sitting, it stiffens up to match. The good news buried in that is real: a young body adapts fast in both directions, so it responds quickly the moment you give movement back.

Your body moulds to what you do most

Tissues settle into the positions you spend the most time in. Sit for hours and your body gets comfortable in that folded-up shape, which is why standing up can feel stiff for the first few steps. It is the position doing that, not your age. Give your body a wider mix of positions and it happily loosens back out.

You are at the best age to turn it around

Because young tissues adapt so quickly, small amounts of regular movement tend to pay off faster for you than they would for an older colleague. You may well notice things easing within days rather than weeks. In other words, you are starting from the most responsive possible place, which is quite a nice position to be in.

The habits you build now carry forward

The strongest reason to start is not really this week's stiffness, it is the next few decades. Movement habits set early tend to stick and compound, so a little effort now buys you a lot of comfort down the line. It is one of those rare things that costs very little today and quietly pays you back for years.

Where to start

Keep it easy and woven into what you already do. You could try getting up between tasks, taking calls on the move, using the stairs, and finding some kind of movement outside work that you actually enjoy rather than endure. The aim is variety and regularity, not intensity. If stiffness has gathered after a long sit, VIDA has a short guided stretch video you can follow at your own pace to loosen off.
