Why your core and glutes are your balance buddies

When people think about balance, they often picture someone standing on one leg or wobbling on a cushion. But true balance starts much deeper, in your core and glutes.

Your core is more than just your abs. It includes muscles around your spine, pelvis and deep belly. These muscles keep you upright, steady and centred as you move. Your glutes, especially the gluteus medius and maximus, help control the position of your pelvis, hips and legs. Together, they form the foundation of your stability.

Here is why this matters:

By strengthening your core and glutes, you are not just working on strength. You are building the body’s ability to coordinate, stabilise and recover, all essential ingredients for good balance.

Think of your core as the centre of a wheel and your glutes as the levers that move it smoothly. When both are strong, your balance work becomes more effective and your everyday movements feel safer and more controlled.
