Goal: Touch your toes
Touching your toes when your hamstrings feel tight or sore
Dr Nicola Tik

The backs of your thighs feel like tight elastic, and every time you reach for your toes they seem to stop you short. When they feel sore too, it’s hard to know whether to stretch them harder or leave them alone. A steady middle path tends to work best.

What your hamstrings do

Your hamstrings are the three muscles at the back of your thighs. They help you bend your knees, straighten your hips and slow your legs down when you walk or run. Because they run from your hips to just below your knees, they play a big part in how far you can reach.

Tightness and soreness

Tightness is that familiar pulling feeling at the end of your reach. It often feels stronger after sitting for a long time or first thing in the morning.

Soreness is different. Many people feel achy hamstrings a day or two after exercise or a busy day on their feet, and this usually settles within a few days. On sore days, you could keep your stretches shorter and gentler rather than skipping them.

Why gentle can be enough

You don’t need to stretch hard to see progress. Studies comparing gentle and stronger stretches suggest lower-intensity stretching can still improve range, and it tends to feel more comfortable. A stretch that feels like a mild pull, rather than a strong one, is a good place to be.

Much of the early change comes from your nervous system getting used to the stretch. When a stretch feels safe, your body lets you go a little further each time. Forcing it can make your muscles tighten up to protect themselves.

Little and often

Regular stretching through the week seems to matter more than long or intense sessions. About 10 minutes a week for each area is enough to see changes. Your daily goal video gives you a short, steady dose, which fits well.

Softer knees help

Keeping a soft bend in your knees lets you stretch your hamstrings without pulling hard on the back of the knee or your lower back. As your hamstrings loosen over the weeks, you may find your legs straighten more naturally.

Strength matters too

Strength exercises that work your hamstrings through a full range, such as slow, controlled bending from the hips, can also improve flexibility. Your goal videos include these alongside the stretches.

Something to try this week

On days your hamstrings feel sore, try your goal video at about half your usual effort, and notice how they feel the next day.
