The hidden link between avascular necrosis of the hip and workplace comfort

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip occurs when the blood supply to the femoral head is reduced, leading to changes in the bone over time. This can cause deep hip or groin pain, stiffness and reduced tolerance to weight-bearing activities. Symptoms may fluctuate and can be influenced by how the hip is loaded during daily activities.

At work, prolonged sitting, standing and repeated transitions can all affect how comfortable the hip feels. Understanding these patterns helps reduce unnecessary strain and supports steadier day-to-day comfort.

How avascular necrosis affects comfort at work

When the hip joint is sensitive to load, both sustained weight-bearing and prolonged stillness can aggravate symptoms.

Common workplace contributors include:

• Prolonged sitting
Staying seated for long periods can increase stiffness and make standing or walking uncomfortable.

• Low or soft seating
Deep hip flexion from low chairs can increase joint stress and groin discomfort.

• Prolonged standing or walking
Sustained weight-bearing without breaks can increase pain or fatigue in the hip.

• Asymmetrical weight-bearing
Leaning into one hip while standing increases load through the affected side.

These patterns can cause discomfort to build gradually throughout the working day.

How to support hip comfort at work

With avascular necrosis, the aim is to manage load carefully, avoid prolonged compression, and use gentle, regular movement.

1. Optimise seating height and support

Choose a chair that allows the hips to sit level with or slightly higher than the knees.
Firm seat support helps reduce excessive hip flexion and makes standing up easier.

2. Avoid prolonged positions

Change position every 20–30 minutes by standing briefly, walking a short distance or adjusting posture.
Short, frequent changes help manage stiffness and load more effectively than long breaks.

3. Stand and walk with symmetry

When standing, distribute weight evenly through both legs rather than leaning into one hip.
If walking around the workplace, take shorter, more frequent walks rather than long continuous periods.

4. Use gentle, comfortable movement

Light movement helps reduce stiffness without overloading the joint, such as:

Movements should feel controlled and stop short of pain.

5. Reduce unnecessary hip load

Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid repeated twisting or bending.
Wear supportive footwear if walking between locations during the day.

Final thoughts

Avascular necrosis of the hip requires careful load management, but workplace habits can make a meaningful difference. By optimising seating, avoiding prolonged positions and using gentle, regular movement, many people can improve comfort and reduce symptom flare-ups during the working day. Small, thoughtful adjustments support more sustainable working patterns.
