Sitting long and moving little? The smallest step that helps
Nicola Tik

Long days in the chair, not much movement in between, and the usual advice to go and do some exercise can feel like a mountain when you are starting from right here. If that is you, it is worth knowing that the single smallest step that helps is easier, and a bit different, from what you might expect. You do not have to begin with exercise at all.

The smallest step is to sit less, not to exercise more

Here is something that quietly changes the whole picture. Sitting a lot and not exercising are actually two separate things, and you can work on either one. When you are starting from both, the easiest and most valuable first move is not to take up exercise, it is simply to interrupt the sitting. Researchers now treat breaking up long stretches of sitting as worthwhile in its own right, quite apart from any workout. So the smallest step is just to stand up more often. No kit, no gym, no getting changed.

Why breaking the sit matters on its own

It is not only how much you sit across a day that counts, but how long you sit without a break. Long, unbroken stretches are the part worth chipping away at. Standing up and taking a few steps every so often keeps your body ticking over, and because it asks so little, it is a genuinely powerful first move rather than a token one. You are simply not letting the stillness run on and on.

Your one small step, stand up often

If you do just one thing, make it this. Set a gentle nudge to stand up roughly every half hour or so, even for a minute. That is the whole ask to begin with. You do not need to walk anywhere or do anything in particular, just break the sit. More often than not, once you are on your feet, a few steps follow by themselves, and that is a bonus rather than the goal.

Let the rest come later

Once sitting less starts to feel normal, moving more tends to creep in on its own, without you having to force it. There is no need to tackle everything at once, and trying to usually backfires. One small step, done often, is plenty for now, and a day you forget is nothing to worry about. You just stand up the next time you remember.
