Goal: Hold a steady plank
Seeing your plank from the side
Dr Nicola Tik

What your plank feels like and what it looks like can be surprisingly different. Many people feel perfectly straight when their bottom is actually lifted, or their hips are dipping. It’s not a lack of effort. When you’re working hard, it’s just difficult to sense your own body position.

Why it’s hard to tell

When you’re holding a plank, your attention is on the effort. Small changes in your hips and shoulders are easy to miss, especially as you tire. A position that started straight can drift without you noticing.

Common surprises

When people see their plank from the side, a few things often stand out:

None of these are failures. They’re just easier to fix once you can see them.

Comparing with the video

Research on learning movement suggests that seeing your own movement alongside a demonstration can help you match it more closely. The plank in the video gives you a good model. Comparing your own side view with it makes the difference easy to spot.

Something to try this week

During one forearm plank this week, you could prop your phone up on the floor to take a side-on photo or short video. Compare it with the plank in the video. Look for a long, straight line from your head to your heels or knees. Then try one more hold, adjusting what you noticed.
