Goal: Hold a steady plank
Planking around your period
Dr Nicola Tik

Your energy, mood and how your body feels can shift through your cycle, and so can your plank. Some days you might hold it with ease. On others, especially around your period, bracing your tummy can feel uncomfortable. Choosing the right version for the day helps you keep building strength.

Why your plank might feel different

Hormones rise and fall through your cycle, and many people notice changes in energy, comfort and motivation. Around your period, cramps, bloating and tiredness are common.

Research on strength and performance across the cycle suggests any changes are small on average and vary a lot from person to person. So if your plank feels harder some days, it’s more likely to be about how you feel than about losing strength.

Bracing with cramps

A forearm plank asks you to gently tighten your tummy muscles. When you have cramps or feel bloated, this can feel uncomfortable. You could try:

Movement and period pain

Gentle movement can be a helpful option around your period. Research suggests regular exercise may help reduce the intensity of period pain for some people. On days you don’t feel up to planking, a walk or the 30-second VIDA videos are good alternatives.

Choosing your version for the day

There’s no single right version. On days you feel strong, you could aim for your goal plank on your toes. On days you feel low, an easier version still builds strength. Keeping your routine going, even at a lighter level, matters more than any one day.

Noticing your own pattern

Everyone’s cycle is different. Some people feel strongest in the days after their period, while others notice little change. Noticing your own pattern can help you plan, for example choosing gentler versions on the days you tend to feel tired.

Your weekly check-in

If your period falls on your weekly check-in day, your time may be shorter than usual. That’s normal. Your results in VIDA over the weeks give a fairer picture than any one check-in.

Something to try this week

On a day you have cramps or feel tired, try the forearm plank on your knees with a gentle brace, and notice how it feels.
