Goal: Reduce pain
Getting back to the things you’ve missed on good days
Dr Nicola Tik

When pain has been part of life for a while, many people step back from things they enjoy, like a sport, a hobby, a long walk or time with friends. Now that good days are more common, it may be the right time to bring some of those back, one step at a time.

Why it matters

The things we enjoy give life meaning, and they’re often what we miss most when pain takes over. Getting back to them can lift your mood and confidence. It also helps your nervous system learn that these activities are safe again, which can help pain stay quieter.

Starting with the smallest version

Rather than jumping straight back in, it helps to start with a small version of the activity. For example:

Step by step

Research on gently and gradually returning to activities people had been avoiding found it helped reduce worry about movement and improved day-to-day function. Each small success builds confidence for the next step.

If you feel nervous

It’s completely normal to feel a little worried about returning to something you associate with pain. You could choose a time when you feel well rested, start with the smallest version, and have someone with you if that helps.

Something to try this week

Write down three things you’ve missed. Choose the one that feels easiest, and try a small version of it this week.
